Book coaching, motivation, and organization:
I work with authors to help them turn a concept, an outline, a rough draft, or
an unfinished manuscript into a complete book, ready to self-publish or present
to a publisher.
Book doctoring: I take "ailing" books that have merit and transform
them into manuscripts ready for publication. I do not accept a book-doctoring
project from an author if I feel there is little hope that the material would be
published. If I think a book is not suitable for publication, I will decline the
job.
Substantive book editing: This includes suggesting and making any major changes, improving the flow of the text by rewriting, or moving entire passages, detecting areas where more information is needed, and ensuring that the reader is never left confused.
Copyediting: I provide a nuts-and-bolts inspection of spelling, grammar, punctuation, word usage, factual information, hyphenation, and capitalization. I also smooth out awkward transitions between sentences, paragraphs, and chapters; check for pacing (changing passive voice to active, eliminating wordiness); and flag ambiguous or questionable statements.
Proofreading: Reprints, scanned material, and heavily edited text that is subject to input errors could all benefit from a comprehensive read-through. I also correct proofs against edited copy.
Web services:
I offer text
and HTML editing, and produce original content.
Writing: I work with you to create a professionally written book or article based on your notes, ideas, or rough draft. You determine my level of involvement in the project, and you remain the author of the work.
Technical writing/editing: In addition to serving the needs of technical publishers, I also edit technical documents for customers, eliminating the frustration caused by inadequate assembly instructions, how-to procedures, sewing patterns, and even recipes. I make sure that step-by-step instructions are thorough, correct, and reader-friendly.
Quality Control Review (QCR): Few editors offer this service, but I consider it an important step in the publication process. Maybe you've reached the point where you feel your manuscript, article, brochure, pamphlet, Web site, or
important sales letter is ready to go, but you'd like a fresh pair of eyes to give it one last look. I offer a quick turnaround on QCR projects at a competitive rate.
